Macaulay's acting career began as a child star at the early age of 5. His first television appearance was through the series The Midnight Hour.

Though Macaulay has been featured in over 20 movies, yet he is most recognized for one of his earliest roles in the movie Home Alone.

Macaulay had a Christian upbringing under the Catholic denomination. Before his acting career got in the way of his education, Macaulay attended a Catholic school. His father was also a very devout Catholic and served as a sacristan. Though there is confirmation concerning how devout he remains to the Catholic faith, Macaulay believes that the fundamental part of every religion based on Christ is to be good to all those around you.
