Early Accomplishments

He started out in music as a child singing in his church choir where he learnt to play both the guitar and piano. During that period Macon radio station WIBB offered him a great opportunity paying him 6 dollars every week for singing on the radio.

He is mostly recognized for his hit single (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay

Otis was straight. 6 years before his death, he got married to Zelma Atwood after meeting her in 1960 at Ga.’s Douglass Theatre. Zelma recalls their connection beginning with an argument which later grew from a love story into a marriage. Otis grew up in a Baptist church and was very devoted when he was young. Moreover his father was a Baptist minister. Though he sang in the choir at his young age, yet his religion at his later years before he died cannot be confirmed. Some sources say he considered his music his religion.

An unfortunate and devastating plane crash claimed his life at the early age of 26.
