Russell’s fame started when he was a child. At early age he got roles in TV series.
In 1963, the future star appeared in The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters where he had a lead role. The same year he also starred in It Happened at the World's Fair (by Elvis Presley).
After several notable roles, the boy was invited to cooperate with Walt Disney studio and signed a contract for 10 years. As a result, he became the brightest and the most profitable young actor.

Russell is not just a professional actor. He was a professional basketball player until his shoulder injury made him leave the sport. He played for California Angels.
