In 1980, Essie Davis was a member of the Sydney Theater Company at the University of Tasmania. Davis graduated from the National Institute of Art in Sydney in 1992.
In 1993, Essie landed the role of Juliet in the play Romeo and Juliet, and her film career began with the Australian film How to Become an Aboriginal.
