Early Accomplishments
Discovered while at drama camp as a teenager, he made his Hollywood debut in the 1988 feature film, Clara’s Heart (which he was nominated for a Golden Globe), then in Purple People Eater. He also appeared in the TV film, Too Good to Be True that same year.
Best Known For
He has appeared in very many films but is well-known to TV lovers for his titular role in Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989-93), as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother (2005-14) and as Count Olaf on A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017-19).
He also won a Tony Award for the Broadway musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2014) and has hosted 4 Tony Award, 2 Primetime Emmy and 1 Oscars ceremony.
Sexual Orientation
Neil was thought to be straight when he dated women like Christine Taylor, Robyn Lively and Carla Bianco but he came out as gay in 2006. He and David Burtka have been married since 2014 after an 8-year engagement that they announced in 2011.
Family
He is the younger of the 2 sons of Ron and Sheila Harris, with his brother being Brian. In 2010, he and his spouse became parents to fraternal twins Gideon and Harper, born via surrogacy.
Religion
Neil is cited to be a devotee of the Protestant Christianity faith. His involvement in over 25 charities may be a measure of the goodwill in his heart.
