American celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain gained global acclaim as an author, travel cataloguer and international cuisine enthusiast.
Early Accomplishments
He was a Boy Scouts of America member in his youth but his interest in food was ignited when he had oyster on a fisherman’s boat while vacationing in France with family.
He dropped out of college and began working in seafood restaurants before attending The Culinary Institute of America in 1976. He ran several New York restaurants soon after.
Best Known For
He is known for traveling to various destinations around the world and documenting their cuisine and lifestyle on shows such as A Cook’s Tour (2002-03), Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005-12) and The Layover (2011-13).
He also has a 2000 bestselling book titled Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.
Sexual Orientation
Anthony was straight and until his death, was in a relationship with Asia Argento since 2017. He was married to high school sweetheart, Nancy Putkoski from 1985 until 2005 and 11 days after the birth of his child in 2007, got married to MMA fighter Ottavia Busia. In 2016, they eventually separated.
Family
He was the older son of Pierre and Gladys Bourdain and had Christopher Bourdain as his brother. He is the father of Ariane, daughter born by Ottavia in 2007.
Religion
Born to a Catholic father and a Jewish mother, he was raised non-religious. He however lived his life as an atheist but respected peoples’ faiths.
Worth To Know
He died by hanging himself in a hotel in France in June 2018. Cause of suicide is still unknown.
His range of “exotic” food he has had include unwashed warthog anus in Namibia, cobra’s beating heart, blood and bile in Thailand, roasted sheep testicles in Morocco, raw seal eyeball in Canada and maggot fried rice.
