Who is David Essex?

David Essex is a singer-songwriter and a part-time actor who rose to prominence in the 70s and is surprisingly still going at it now.

Early Accomplishments

Football was his primary passion and even purposely failed his Eleven plus exam just so he can enroll in a school where football was played. He was part of the junior team at West Ham United before music found him and began to play drums for a local band.

At age 18, he recorded his first single titled And the Tears Came Tumbling Down.

Best Known For

He has quite a number of UK Top 40 hits but the most famous of these is still his 1973 hit, Rock On. Some other famous songs of his include Gonna Make You a Star (1974), Hold Me Close (1975) and Oh, What a Circus (1979).

As an actor, he is famed for roles as Jesus in the musical, Godspell (1971) and as Jim in the 1974 film, Stardust.

Born David Cook, he is the son of Albert and Olive (Kemp) Cook. With Maureen as their mother, he fathers daughter Verity and son Danny and with Carlotta, he fathers twins Kit and Billy. He also has a very young son with Susan named Sonny.

David is a well-known gypsy and an ex-president of Great Britain’s Romany Union but still appears to be Christian to some extent.
