Robert directed his first movie when he was twenty-six. 

The movie, Balls Bluff, talked about freedom and anti-establishment ideas.

Robert Sr. is most famous for producing and directing Putney Swope, a revolutionary film that touched upon questions of race and commercialism that existed in American society. 

He had directed, written, and starred in many other films like Magnolia, Hail Caesar, Too Much Sun, Moving Target, Rented Lips, The Gong Show Movie, Moment to Moment, Pound, No More Excuses etc.

Robert is the son of Elizabeth and Robert Elias. He is the only child in the family.
Later Robert’s parents divorced, and his mother went on to marry James Downey, who became Robert’s stepfather. 

He used to be married to Elsie Ford, they had two children together, Robert Jr. and Allyson. 

Both of his children turned to cinema, Robert Jr. going into acting and Allyson into writing and acting as well.

Now he is married to Rosemary Rogers, a writer.

Originally Robert Sr. didn’t want to change his surname, but when it caused difficulties when he was trying to join the army, he decided to change it to his stepfather’s, Downey.  

Robert Sr. used to have a drug problem, an unfortunate habit that he passed on to his son. Although he struggles with various substances for a very long time, he got over it and now is clean.
